The world’s largest sand island (formerly Fraser Island) is now officially known as K’gari (pronounced GUR-rie or Gurri, without the ‘k’), the Butchulla people’s traditional name for the island.
The name 'K'gari' comes from the Butchulla people's creation story of the island, which has been passed down orally for generations.
The name change follows Queensland Government engagement with local stakeholders since 2011 and public consultation in 2022 which received almost 6000 submissions.
What does this mean for tourism businesses?
It is not mandatory for tourism businesses to change their name if it includes the words ‘Fraser Island’, but they are encouraged to incorporate K’gari on their promotional material, websites and signage to recognise the widespread acceptance of K’gari.
There is no formal transition period or moratorium associated with the name change, however transitions to the new name should be completed within 12 months from 7 June 2023.
